Course Evaluations
OTL administers student evaluations of teaching (SET) and provides guidance for interpreting SET reports.
Teaching Effectiveness Guidance
Teaching is central to the work of all faculty at UCSB, and teaching effectiveness is central to the merit review process. OTL’s Teaching Effectiveness Guidance was developed in collaboration with hundreds of UCSB faculty of all ranks and in consultation with the joint administrative-Senate Teaching Evaluation Workgroup.
Graduate Mentoring
Mentoring is an integral part of teaching and learning. Best Practices for Faculty Mentoring were developed by Graduate Division and the Academic Senate’s Graduate Council to help faculty guide students through degree requirements, thesis or dissertation research, and professional development and career attainment.
Documenting Your Teaching
By systematically documenting your teaching, you can reflect on your instructional practices, identify areas for improvement, and demonstrate your commitment to your students, and educational excellence. This process not only enhances your teaching effectiveness but also serves as a valuable tool for personal and professional development and supporting your merit review.

Merit Review Process
Faculty merit review cases typically follow a consistent process outlined in the diagram below. (CAP=Academic Senate on Academic Personnel; AVC=Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel)

Academic Personnel offers regular promotion workshops for Senate faculty. Resources and future dates are listed on the AP site.
The UCSB Academic Senate’s Committee on Academic Personnel provides additional resources for faculty preparing merit review cases. They are linked from the Academic Senate’s “Personnel Cases” FAQ page.
UC Academic Personnel Policies and Resources
All UCSB academic personnel policy is guided by University of California Academic Personnel Policy processes as outlined in the Academic Personnel Manual (or APM) and the UCSB Personnel Manual, also known as the “Red Binder.” Teaching is addressed, especially, in APM 210 and Red Binder sections I and II.
